Zero to Infinity (2018) by Raftaar: Latest Album Review

The Poet with a swag is back with his most awaited album Zero to Infinity. Raftaar has dedicated the album to his fans and plans a world tour so the fans can get to know him better. So, if you love Raftaar, 2018 is going to be a treat for you.

A Malayali boy who grew up in Punjab and ended up as a rapper, Raftaar is well known to the masses for chartbuster numbers like Tamanche Pe Disco, Bandook Meri Laila, Mehbooba, Toh Dishoom and many more. He started out as part of Mafia Mundeer, a music group formed by Yo Yo Honey Singh, yet he soon left the group as it was overshadowing his talent. Since that time, the rapper has contributed to several songs that have been rocking every party upon their release.

With Zero to Infinity, the rapper wants to showcase himself to his fans. The album is a genre-hopping mix of songs of different styles. Raftaar claims Zero to Infinity is a diverse album that has something for everyone.

Zero to Infinity – List of Songs

  1. Baby Marvake Maanegi: The album kicks-off the with a peppy number, titled Baby Marvake Maanegi, featuring the sizzling ex-Big Boss contestant Nora Fatehi. The title may sound demeaning but all it means is “baby will get you killed”. The rapper considers women stronger than men and that reflects in most of his songs just like this one.

  2. Sare Karo DabSare Karo Dab is a peppy, fast song featuring the singing sensations – Sonu Kakkar and Muhfaad. The song features a dubstep-like drop in the chorus while the verses are super-fast rap ballads. It’s a rare delight for the rap lovers of India. The rap number ends with a tongue-twisting verse that’s going to give all the karaoke singer’s, a run for their money!

  3. GaddiGaddi is a funky hip-hop song featuring Deep Kalsi. It talks about “All things Swag” including a black luxury car going @ 100 kmph, drifting with music beats and stuff like that. It may read like any mainstream Punjabi R&B song, but when you listen to it, the tunes are hard to forget. When fused with the simple-yet-defining lyrics, it creates a happy visual image you can relate to.

  4. Gall GoriyeGall Goriye is a fun-filled romantic track featuring Maninder Buttar. The track has a catchy tune and vocals that sound traditionally Punjabi. The track, as most of Raftaar’s songs, is a women-centric number. The poet with a swag puts in a rap about the difference between a girl’s actual definition of love against the demeaning gender biased thoughts most men tend to have.

  5. Jean TeriJean Teri is a quirky track with trippy beats to get you grooving. The track features Jaz Dhami and Deep Kalsi alongside Raftaar. The chorus comes with a super-catchy drop making it a perfect number for clubs and parties. As always, Raftaar’s rap in the song is its main highlight. He makes it sound intensely romantic in a manner in which, a guy professes his love to a girl and the things he’d do for her.

  6. LonelyAs the name suggests, Lonely is a soft melody that reflects the feelings of being alone, when nothing feels good. The song features a slow tune that jingles throughout the song. The track isn’t exactly one of his best compositions, and it’s a little out-of-the-box as compared to Raftaar’s usual peppy tunes. Perhaps, this is exactly what the singer intended when he said: “The album has something for everyone”.

  7. Mundeya Di MauttMundeya Di Mautt is an upbeat hip-hop track by Raftaar and Yunan. The song features a throbbing beat and riveting rap verses that’ll get stuck in your head. The poet with a swag never disappoints when it comes to making songs that’ll get you off your seat and straight on to the dance floor.
  8. Woh ChoriWoh Chori is again a hip-hop ballad with trippy tunes. It starts with an Arabic feel as Jyotica Tangri sings “Haye Marhaba”. The song has a similar vibe to Sare Karo Dab featuring similar grooves and rap wordplays by Raftaar. A fast-tempo number, you won’t notice when you started singing along, once you play it a couple of times.

Overall, the album is a mix of happy, sad, aggressive, and exciting numbers that grow on you easily. It features long rap ballads that bring out Raftaar’s finesse with Hinglish rap. If you’re already a fan of the artist, this would be the most satisfying project by him so far.

Raftaar has stated that as he has now the prerogative to say “No” because of his growing fame, he will no longer be part of any project that has songs featuring lyrics that are demeaning to women. The artist believes his album will bring a new change to mainstream Punjabi hip-hop music as the songs are meant to empower women.

Some songs may just sound run-of-the-millat first, but they do get better and better as you play them in a loop. And, as the Malayali born Punjabi-singer mentioned about genre-hopping, he has truly delivered. It’s an album for a diverse audience with a different taste for soundscapes.

Play it first on Saavn. See how fast you can go from Zero to Infinity!

All That Jazz in Bollywood

Jazz has its roots in the melting pot of African and American culture in the city of New Orleans. In the 1920s, the port city had a vibrant nightlife where the working class would get together to play music. Thus, jazz evolved from slave songs and spirituals and became embodied within the African American experience. Since then, jazz has spread across the world and given rise to many distinctive forms of music.

A soulful amalgamation of blues and ragtime, jazz has been an integral part of Hindi cinema since the 1950s. It all started when Goan musicians Frank Fernand, Sebastian D’Souza and Anthony Gonsalves started mixing Indian classical compositions with western renditions.

Jazz is the Sound of the Soul

Jazz is a language which if you don’t get it, you don’t get it. For those of who do, it is emotional, sensual, soothing, edgy, soulful, warm, dark and much more. While Bollywood might not produce classical jazz, it is loaded with a lot of elements. Piano and trumpets are to jazz what lyrics are to country rock. When you listen to Sheher Mera from One By Two, apart from the beautiful voice of Thomas Andrews, there is a prominent presence of piano and trumpets that take you right back to the jazz clubs of the Gatsby era.

Roots of Jazz in Bollywood

Jazz in Bollywood gained momentum during the golden age of Hindi film music. Be it the sensual Aaiye Meharban from Howrah Bridge or the evergreen Babuji Dheere Chalna from Aar-Paar, jazz music has grown on Indian audiences over the years. Composer and pianist George Gershwin rightly said, ‘Life is a lot like jazz… it’s best when you improvise’. The many solo improvisations of saxophones in Bollywood jazz songs add a dramatic high which romanticizes the cinematic experience, such as “Kaisi Yeh Paheli Zindagi” in Parineeta.

Jazz Influence in Recent Day Bollywood

In recent times, Mikey McCleary is one of the most popular names in the Bollywood jazz space. His jazz renditions of old songs like “Khoya Khoya Chand” and “Hawa Hawai” were blockbuster hits, almost as if these classics found an altogether new audience.

The 2015 period crime drama Bombay Velvet saw a very strong jazz influence. The discography by Amit Trivedi transported you from your cinema hall seats to Jazz by the Bay of the 1960s. Jazz, when used in a song or as a background track, adds aesthetic appeal to the film. It sets a mood that teleports you to a café with live music scenes where you can drink and dance all day long.

Other Bollywood Jazz

Bollywood has seen its share of different flavours of jazz in the past decades. “Gore Gore O Banke Chhore” (Samadhi), Mera Naam Chin Chin (Howrah Bridge), and Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhagi Si (Chalti ka Naam Gaadi) are fine examples of a mix of pleasant harmonies, bass guitar and complicated rhythms. Upbeat numbers like Girls Like To Swing (Dil Dhadakne Do); slow melodies like Tu Bole Main Boloon (Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na) are few of the fabulous jazz pieces in recent years.

Jazz puts a smile on your face, makes your body move to its beat, and is your companion when you want to delve in your own tears. Trends may evolve and people’s taste may change, but jazz is here to dazzle one and all.

Power Heroines of Bollywood: Celebrating 8 Exemplary Women from Hindi Cinema this Women’s Day

In this brave new age of #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, women are standing up for themselves everywhere in the world. From the historic Women’s March to the advancement of women’s rights in the middle east – it’s an era of social inclusion.

In a massive, coordinated effort, the women of Hollywood led by advocates like Meryl Streep and Silence Breakers like Ashley Judd are standing up in a big way for not just themselves but women across all walks of life. The impact has been palpable.

Bollywood (only too well known for its tone-deafness, stock caricatures and unabashed male centricity) has also been forced to change over the years by some powerful actresses who have pushed the glass ceiling with all their might.

This women’s day (and month), let’s pay a tribute to all these Power Heroines of Bollywood who have been the trailblazers of women’s emancipation in India.

  • Sridevi – The First Female Superstar of India

The unexpected demise of Sridevi left India reeling under shock. After all, she looked in her prime, having delivered two trailblazing hits – English Vinglish and MOM in the last few years. Even in her younger days, Sridevi was a true pathbreaker. She changed the perceptions of women in films, and could easily carry a film on her shoulders – something incredibly rare in Indian cinema.

The outpouring of grief that clutched the nation on her tragic death revealed the true extent of her social and cultural influence, something that she achieved without ever losing her humility or making a loud statement. Losing her means we’ve lost out on many opportunities to make the world a better place for women.

Did you know that Sharmila Tagore was considered a bad influence on other girls (and nearly thrown out of school) for working in films when she was a kid? She didn’t let little things like uncalled for criticism and shaming deter her.

From the bikini clad babe in An Evening in Paris to the reticent Pushpa from Aradhana, Sharmila Tagore broke several expectations of lead heroines in Bollywood. Her acts were subtle yet powerfully portrayed. She straddled commercial and art cinema with ease. Sharmila Tagore was also one of the first Bollywood heroines to continue working after her marriage, thus defying a strong stereotype that has plagued many a talented actress.

  • Kajol – Not Your Damsel-in-Distress

Loud, outspoken and the very antithesis of the fair, demure maiden that Bollywood expected its women to be, Kajol was a pathbreaker in her own right. Actresses in the early 90s in Bollywood were but arm candies to the heroes around whom the plot revolved. Kajol silently shattered the stereotypes of the conventional Bollywood beauty by rocking a dusky skin and a monobrow (even when the lyrics were plain absurd like Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhen, Yeh Gore Gore Gaal). So strong was her screen presence that she never even had to consciously toe the line. Even today, she’s a dominant force at the Box Office.

This feisty actress will not bow down to anything. After conquering Bollywood with power-packed performances like Fashion, Mary Kom and Barfi, Priyanka set out to conquer the west. If the ratings of her show Quantico (or her regular appearance in talk-shows, fashion events and tabloids in the US) are anything to go by, she’s already carved a legacy for herself. And boy, does she speak her mind!

Kangana Ranaut added to the feminist discourse of Bollywood like no other. From refusing to endorse fairness creams in a nation of brown people, to calling out the casual sexism, nepotism and abuse prevalent in Bollywood (and lots more), she’s done it all.

The gossip fodder of her personal relationships and ego-battles on national television take nothing away from her brilliant performances in unprecedented movies like Queen.

She proudly owns her space, is comfortable with her body, continues to work after settling down. And what’s more, she delivers phenomenal hits – all on her own strength. The Dirty Picture, Kahani and now Tumhari Sulu are hallmarks of her individualistic and limitless talent. She’s got the country talking about body positivity and being a woman with aspirations in India. She’s played a dominant role in most of her movies without ever falling into the trappings of money, fame or success.

Marrying Virat Kohli was just an icing on the cake. Anushka Sharma is a power brand in herself –  strong, secure and successful. She’s not just an actor who loves to experiment and take on challenging roles. She even dons multiple hats, primarily reserved for men in Bollywood. And she’s belting out one unconventional film after another through her own production house – such as NH10, Phillauri and Pari.

Sushmita Sen is an exemplary woman who has not just defied social conventions of female stardom but also of womanhood itself. This lady is a shining beacon of what womanly confidence is like. She adopted a daughter right at the peak of her fame, and let nothing interfere with her upbringing. Then she went on to adopt a second daughter, thus proving that she was happy with how her life had turned out the first time around.
